Android 2.2 might already be rolling out to the Nexus One — but what about it’s nearly-identical European brother, the HTC Desire?

If a random HTC customer service rep is to be believed — which we generally wouldn’t recommend — the Desire should be seeing Android 2.2 in all of its Flash-packin’, performance-boosting glory within the next month.

Our buds over at Phandroid spotted this gem on XDA-Dev. The tale, as its told: a grumpy customer decided to ring up HTC about his Desire’s inability to store applications on the SD card — an issue which is nullified in Android 2.2.

The CS Rep initially refused to budge on any info, but Grumpy McCustomer kept on pushing. After a quick chat with his supervisor, the CS Rep dropped this litle tid-bit:

But you never heard this from me…. A new update is coming the 23rd of June and you will be able to put some apps on to the micro sd card.

So, in other words: according to a forumgoer who purportedly spoke to a CS rep who allegedly had inside info on the HTC Desire’s update plans, Android 2.2 is coming to the Desire on June 23rd. Take it as you will, won’t you?

Right now, filming is underway for the new iPhone commercials (directed by Sam Mendes, of American Beauty fame), and Engadget have it on good authority that one scene will feature a mother and daughter video-chatting to each other using their next-gen iPhones. Aw, how sweet.

Of course, don’t expect any official confirmation before June 7th, but I think this one’s a pretty safe bet.

The first herald of the iPhone 3G’s impending death has come.

Sometime early this morning, Apple pulled the “Select” button off of the iPhone purchasing page. If you want an iPhone from Apple’s online store right this second, you’re buying a 3GS — or, you know, waiting a few weeks and getting the new toy, or at least getting the 3GS a few bills less after the inevitable price drop.

Well, well, would you looky here? Seems like that super-exclusive iPhone leak that Gizmodo and Engadget were involved in has repeated itself in Vietnam.

Engadget reported earlier this morning about the leak, and noticed that the phone is slightly different from the one seen during Gizgate, in that the screws on the bottom of the phone are no longer present.

Aside from that, there are few other differences. The model is still pre-production — you can see little XXX placeholders on the body — so it may still change before launch, but the front-facing camera looks to be a pretty sure thing.

Man oh man. While it may just be benchmark scores at this point, this kind of speed increase is nothing to snuff at.

Ian Douglas has run some benchmarks on his Froyo-powered Nexus One, and it’s scoring almost 5 times better.

To be a bit more specific, an Eclair-powered Nexus One usually scores around 6-7 MFLOPS in Linpack benchmarks, but this shiny new Froyo build delivers a blistering 38-40 MFLOPS.

The magic comes from the spankin’ new JIT compiler included in the Froyo build.

Now, as I said before, these are just benchmark results, so real-world performance will differ.

Android And Me point out that Android apps will probably have to be tweaked to take full advantage of the new compiler, so it could be a few months after release before Android users really start seeing a difference.

But, man, I’m excited.

Yesterday, a video showing off Flash 10.1 on a Froyo-powered Nexus One emerged. This bump in speed could explain how it was able to run so smoothly.

So, here’s to hoping that 2.2 makes it to my upgrade-shy HTC Hero.*

*yes, I have a European HTC Hero, and not a Sprint one, but I’m still plagued by the same upgrade-frustration…

A wee bit of a Windows Phone 7 bombshell dropped today: Dan Neary, Asia pacific Vice President for Skype, told Sydney-siders today that Skype won’t be developing a client for Microsoft’s much-overdue successor to Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 (henceforth to be known as WinPho 7).

Dan-the-man neglected to give a reason why, but WM Power User have offered some possible explanations. Either a lack of faith in the platform, or difficulties in coding a VoIP app without having access to native code or multi-tasking.

When a major player in the mobile app ecosystem drops support for a platform, it begs the question: who else will defect? Is this a sign that WinPho 7 is doing something wrong? Or are Skype fools to let this ship sail?

Only time will tell… *exits enigmatically*

But fear not, there is a easy bugfix for this:

Go to settings –> Wireless –> APN and remove the Port and Proxy settings, restart the phone and voila. Exchange is working again!

Y’see, the latest iPhone SDK allows full access to video capture data, and there are some preset values in the SDK that explicitly mention a 1280×720 video resolution.

It’s pretty clear cut evidence, so you could almost bet the house that the next iPhone is gonna have HD video recording. Given that the most prevalent of rumoured names for the upcoming iPhone is “iPhone HD” this really comes as little surprise.

Still, it’s good to have some kind of confirmation of a much-wanted feature before we get the official announcement on June 7.
